New Music: Cher Lloyd f/ T.I. – ‘I Wish’

I Wish

Cher Lloyd links with the King of the South on her new single “I Wish.” The British pop star asks her genie to grant her some style, flash, and even some ass in order to get her man.

“I wish I woke up with a butt and a rack,” she sings, while Tip works some magic on his playful verse.

“The underlying meaning of the song would probably mean being your average girl and liking someone and then realizing that you’re not actually happy with yourself and you don’t think that they are happy with you either,” explained the “X Factor” alum. “You feel a bit low I suppose and you want all the things that that other girl has that he likes.”

Cher will kick off her “I Wish” tour with Fifth Harmony on Sept. 6 in Washington, D.C.

The Juwan Lee-directed clip co-stars Chi-Ali and picks up where “V.S.O.P.” left off. A scorned K is seen burning her man’s clothes as she toasts marshmallows on the sidewalk.

“She’s caught her man cheating for the last time and she’s over it,” explained Lee of the concept. “But she drives off, her friend keeps her from doing something crazy. She comes here to reconcile everything.”

Drake Reacts to Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Control’ Verse: ‘He’s Not Murdering Me’

Kendrick Lamar and Drake

Kendrick Lamar lit a fire in his peers with his explosive verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” But Drake isn’t sweating it. The Canadian rapper says the Compton MC doesn’t pose a threat to him.

Drake, along with J. Cole, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, and Mac Miller, was among the MCs called out by Kendrick.

So how did he react? “I went about my day, went and got dinner and kept it moving,” Drizzy told Billboard.

“I didn’t really have anything to say about it,” he continued. “It just sounded like an ambitious thought to me. That’s all it was. I know good and well that Kendrick’s not murdering me, at all, in any platform. So when that day presents itself, I guess we can revisit the topic.”

He’s been focused on his own album Nothing Was the Same, which drops Sept. 24. The project is set to feature appearances from Jay Z, Lil Wayne, and 2 Chainz.

“There’s a lot less sort of ambient ballad moments on this album where I’m searching or longing for something,” he said of the follow-up to 2011’s Take Care. “That sentiment is gone. Now I’m just kind of like, ‘You know, I’m 26, I don’t know what the fuck else I could be doing better than this. I feel incredible about how I’m able to support my family and friends and how supportive my family and friends have been of me.’”

Drake will kick off his North American tour with Future and Miguel on Sept. 25 in Portland, OR.

Alicia recently celebrated her third wedding anniversary. “It’s hot!” said Alicia of her marriage to Swizz Beatz.

Chris Brown Performs on ‘Today’ Summer Concert Series

Chris Brown

Chris Brown kicked off Labor Day weekend with a visit to the “Today” Summer Concert Series. The R&B singer took over New York’s Rockefeller Plaza to perform a mini-concert for Team Breezy, who camped out all night to see him. With his girlfriend Karrueche Tran in the audience, he performed his X hits “Fine China” and “Love More,” plus Sean Kingston’s “Beat It.”

Breezy suffered a seizure earlier this month, but is doing fine. “I’m good, I’m good. Just needed some rest, that’s it,” he said.

But when asked about his recent “negative” tweets, he shut down Matt Lauer. “It’s not my music,” he said, avoiding the question. “I’m loving my fans.”

He made headlines when he tweeted that X would possibly be his last album, but he didn’t say if he planned to leave the business. “I’m just putting out the music for now,” said the 24-year-old. “I’m going to continue to work for my fans and make sure they have fun.”

Kendrick Lamar Talks Miley Cyrus, ‘Control’ on ‘Chelsea Lately’

Kendrick Lamar and Chelsea Handler

Kendrick Lamar was met with roaring applause when he stopped by “Chelsea Lately” on Thursday. The “Swimming Pools” MC, who the comedienne called a “cute little nugget,” turned on the charm as he chatted about Miley Cyrus’ racy VMA performance, his basketball dreams, and upbringing in Compton.

He was included in Miley’s set with Robin Thicke at the VMAs. “It was shocking, very shocking,” said Kendrick of the pop star’s performance. “It didn’t get in the way of what I was doing, but I definitely was interested.”

Chelsea also brought up his controversial “Control” verse. “A lot of cats I named, they’re actually good friends of mine. I basically wanted to show that I’m competitive,” he explained. “That keeps the level of hip-hop alive as far as the culture.”

Before hip-hop, K-Dot had dreams of playing in the NBA. “Before music, I wanted to be Michael Jordan. But like you said, I’m a small guy, I only grew to 5’6″ and it deferred my dreams to actually writing rhymes.”

Kendrick Lamar Reveals His Favorite ‘Control’ Response

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar is finally breaking his silence about his explosive verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” Following his interview with Power 106, the “Poetic Justice” MC called into Hot 97′s “Cipha Sounds & Rosenberg Show” to address the reaction to the song, his controversial “king of New York” line, meeting with Jay Z and Diddy, and his favorite response.

On his “king of New York” line: “It made feel like I gotta probably dumb down my lyrics nowadays for the people that take it way outta context the way they did. The irony behind it all is the main heads that really understood the context of the line was the actual kings of New York. The cats that I’ve sat down with this past week and those that understand that it’s not about the coast, it’s not about what side we on. It’s about being as big as Biggie or Pac, the two cats that I’ve referenced from jump. I feel like I’m a student of the work that they did. And eventually when I put down 20 years in the game, I can eventually plant my foot and have that same type of legacy. For people that try and make it out into something that it’s not, I’d never take the history behind what Pac laid or what B.I.G. laid.”

On Snoop Dogg: “To keep it 100 with you, Snoop will always be number one and I’m from the West Coast. And he gave me that, but out of respect for my big homie, I understand it. He laid it down. I only got one album out, one album out. I got years to be doing this, so at the end of the day, Snoop will always be my big homie and the legends that came before me, they will always stand tall where they’re at. I can’t stop myself from wanting to be great just like them.”

On his conversation with Jay Z: “That’s classified between me and him. But it was all love, all respect. Same way with Diddy and the same with a few of the other cats. I feel like the end of the day I feel as though you have certain cats that really take it to the next level and make it a rivalry thing and try to bring back that old thing. That’s old school, homie. Remind you that we’re black men out here tryna uplift the culture. My first sold out show was in New York, so I always looked at that place as a place that respected me and my lyrics. And we respected the culture and the birthplace of it.”

On the responses: “I think the ones that really took it out of context was the people that we know want to grab an opportunity off the hype of the record rather than actually tuning in and listening and knowing how hungry I am. A lot of people think it’s about talent. That’s why they get it wrong. I’m saying that I’m the most hungry in this. I respect the legends in the game, I respect people that done it before me, people that lost their lives over this. Because of what they laid down, I’m gonna try to come harder and breathe it and live it. That’s the point of the whole verse, what I’m tryna convey through that verse. All the ignorance behind it, you can kill that noise.”

On what he fears: “It will never be like that again where two coasts rival, not on my behalf, not while I’m doing this. I think the OGs of the game would want that anyway. They’d want that competitive nature back, but no bloodshed over it. I’m way too wise and I’m way too polished to get caught up in the hype of the media. But what I’m scared is cats that’s not that polished and they gettin’ caught up in what their Twitter responses is saying and what their homies around them saying and people gassing them up and they try to take it to the next level. Nah, that’s not G, that’s not gangsta.”

On his favorite response: “I like the Los verse. Joe Budden did his thing… Joell. I like people with different approaches. They was stating they facts. Joey had the facts in his verse, a few things that he felt. Papoose had the comical joint. Los was flipping his words and putting that spark on it. I think he had the killer thing though, Los. Los killed it out of everybody. But the number one joint at the top of the list had to be Chocolate Drop, Kevin Hart. That dude’s funny. He made light of the situation.”

Kendrick Lamar Speaks Out on ‘Control’ Verse

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar caused a firestorm with his verse on Big Sean’s “Control,” but he hasn’t been heard from until now. In an interview with “Big Boy’s Neighborhood” on Power 106, the Compton rapper finally addressed the explosive track.

Kendrick called out his peers including J. Cole, Wale, Drake, Meek Mill, and Mac Miller on the Hall of Fame leftover. The song spawned several fiery responses from MCs including Joell Ortiz, Papoose, B.o.B, and Cassidy.

But he was surprised by the reaction. “Honestly I didn’t know there would be so much speculation behind it,” said Kendrick. “I just wanted to rap. Anybody that knows me doing music, I wanna just rap.”

He also proclaimed himself the “king of New York,” which rubbed some rappers the wrong way. “I think that’s the case right there of maybe I just dumbed down my lyrics just a little bit,” he said.

But he didn’t mean it literally. He had a conversation with some of hip-hop’s elite, who weren’t offended by his verse. “The irony of that line is the people that actually understood it and got it, was the actual kings of New York,” explained K-Dot. “You know, me sitting down with them this past week and them understanding that it’s not about actually being the king of whatever coast. It’s about leaving a mark as great as Biggie, as great as ‘Pac.”

CeeLo Green Throws Out First Pitch at Dodgers Game

CeeLo Green

CeeLo Green celebrated the release of Goodie Mob’s first album in over a decade by throwing out the first pitch at the Dodgers game on Tuesday. “The Voice” star was joined by his fellow Goodie Mob groupmates Khujo, T-Mo, and Big Gipp at Dodger Stadium on his release day.

Clad in a Dodgers jersey, blue shorts, and sandals, CeeLo took the pitcher’s mound and threw the ball right across home plate. Luckily, he saved himself from the baseball hall of shame (see Carly Rae Jepsen).

Goodie Mob’s reunion album Age Against the Machine is out now and the Atlanta group is also taping a reality show for TBS called “The Good Life.”

Kanye West Records ‘Black Skinhead’ Remix with Miley Cyrus?

Kanye West and Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus may be catching heat for her raunchy VMA performance, but she has a fan in Kanye West. Following Sunday’s show, the rapper and pop star reportedly hit the studio to record a remix to “Black Skinhead.”

According to Page Six, Cyrus bailed on her own VMA after-party and headed straight from Barclays Center to the lab for a late-night, “top-secret” collaboration with Yeezus.

The song is said to be part of a remix EP that will be released later this year.

Kanye was originally scheduled to perform “Black Skinhead” at the VMAs, but made a last-minute change and decided to showcase another Yeezus cut, “Blood on the Leaves.”
