Rihanna in Talks to Perform at Super Bowl Halftime Show

Rihanna

Rihanna may be taking the stage at the Super Bowl next year. The singer is reportedly among the frontrunners for the 2015 halftime performance.

According to The Wall Street Journal , the NFL has named Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay as the three contenders for the highly-coveted gig.

But there’s one big caveat. For the first time ever, the NFL is asking artists if they would be willing “to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.”

Unsurprisingly, the pay-to-play suggestion received “a chilly reception” from the artists’ reps.

Artists have never been paid by the league in the past. However, superstars including Beyoncé and Bruno Mars have capitalized off the mass exposure by announcing their tours immediately after the Super Bowl.

So just how much is the 12-minute performance worth? A 30-second ad cost around $4 million during this year’s game, which was the most-watched Super Bowl ever with 111.5 million viewers.

Following his 2014 performance with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Bruno Mars’ concert tickets, album sales, and merchandise all took a boost.

No final decisions have been made about next year’s performer and it’s unclear how much money the league is seeking.

Find out who gets the gig when Super Bowl XLIX touches down in Glendale, Ariz. on February 1, 2015.
