Bruno Mars Meets the Press at Super Bowl Halftime Show Conference

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars will join an illustrious list of past performers including Beyoncé, Madonna, and Michael Jackson when he takes the field during the Pepsi Halftime Show at Super Bowl XLVIII. Ahead of Sunday’s game, the Grammy-winning crooner charmed reporters, old and young, with his Spanish and Elvis impression during the press conference at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on Thursday.

The first question came from Michelle Williams, reporting for “The Insider.” The Destiny’s Child singer, who performed with Beyoncé at last year’s show, asked him what his reaction was when he heard he would be performing.

“Some greats have been on this stage and we’re just excited that we’re getting this shot,” said Bruno, who joked about coming well equipped with “three gallons of hairspray.”

He just began rehearsals two nights ago in New Jersey’s freezing cold MetLife Stadium. While he wouldn’t give away details, he did offer a teaser.

“I hope to get people dancing and people smiling,” he told one reporter. “If you ever come to one of our shows, it’s just us up there with these songs and our instruments. I’m hoping that’s enough.”

He will also share the stage with the legendary Red Hot Chili Peppers. “I’ve been a fan of theirs for such a long time. I admire their career,” said Bruno. “They’re a soulful band and not just musically, as people.”

Ne-Yo Shoots ‘Incredible’ Video with Celine Dion

Ne-Yo and Celine Dion

What do you get when you combine Celine Dion’s big voice and Ne-Yo’s songwriting skills? An “Incredible” duet. The pop diva and R&B crooner went in front of the lens to shoot a video for their collaboration off Celine’s latest album Loved Me Back to Life. “Good Morning America” was on set as they filmed on a rooftop in downtown L.A. last week.

It was Celine’s 13-year-old son son René-Charles Angelil who persuaded her to do the collaboration. “He said, ‘Mom, you don’t even have to listen to the song. You have to do it,’” said Celine.

At first, Ne-Yo was hesitant about singing with the vocal powerhouse. “The issue for me, initially, was the whole concept of a duet,” he said. “You know, it’s Celine Dion.”

But the 45-year-old veteran was able to learn from her 31-year-old collaborator. “Ne-Yo, among other artists, gave me the chance to still be the best of myself with a little bit of tweaking the sound, on a modern approach.”

Their inspirational anthem will be played at next month’s 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Azealia Banks: ‘I’m the Best Female in Hip-Hop’

Azealia Banks

Modesty has never been Azealia Banks’ strong suit. The Harlem rapper has come under fire again after declaring herself the “best female in hip-hop.”

The unapologetic Banks, notorious for her feuds with her peers including Iggy Azalea, T.I., Rita Ora, and Angel Haze, took to Twitter to proclaim her greatness.

“I’m the best female in hip-hop. Sorry, not sorry. I’m better than most of you niggas too. Real Talk,” tweeted the “212” hitmaker.

She followed it with an explanation. “I’m the only new female rapper with her own voice. All the other girls are doing the post-nicki minaj thing,” she said.

Banks, whose debut Broke With Expensive Taste has been repeatedly delayed, also recently pleaded for her label to release her. “I’m literally begging to be dropped from Universal,” she tweeted. “Universal needs to just hand me over to another label who knows what to do with me.”

She added, “I’m tired of having to consult a group of old white guys about my black girl craft. they don’t even know what they’re listening for or to … Can someone at Sony buy me off of Universal please?? i’m really in hell here.”

After her single “ATM Jam” failed to take off, she blamed her collaborator Pharrell for his lack of support. “The reason ATM jam did poorly is because pharell changed his mind about wanting to be associated with me after he had his lite skin comeback,” Banks told fans.

In the meantime, she has collaborated with Busta Rhymes on a remix to Beyoncé’s “Partition” and will perform at London’s Wireless Festival in July.

Katy Perry is celebrating another No. 1 as “Dark Horse,” her collaboration with Juicy J, finishes on top this week.

The trap-dance single off PRISM, produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin, jumps 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and earns Perry her ninth No. 1.

“This No. 1 is the most unexpected one I’ve ever had,” the pop superstar tells Billboard. “‘Dark Horse’ has been a dark horse of a song, since August when the KatyCats voted to release it early on iTunes, before PRISM even came out. I’m so thrilled and grateful to have these moments.”

Juicy J scores his first Hot 100 No. 1. He previously peaked at No. 11 in October as a guest on Mike WiLL Made-It’s “23″ featuring Miley Cyrus and Wiz Khalifa.

The Memphis rapper toasted with a bottle of champagne and some Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. “Time to celebrate #1 record in the country #darkhorse,” he tweeted.

“Dark Horse” marks Perry’s second No. 1 single off PRISM following “Roar.” She currently ties the Bee Gees, Elton John, a solo Paul McCartney, and Usher for the artist with the 10th most No. 1 singles.

Kendrick Lamar Reacts to Grammy Shutout

Kendrick Lamar

Hip-hop fans were outraged after Kendrick Lamar lost all seven of his nominations at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. But the Compton MC is not feeling sorry for himself. Speaking out for the first time since his loss, he congratulated Macklemore on his wins.

“It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man,” Kendrick told XXL after his performance with Dom Kennedy in New York on Tuesday. “He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go.”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis scored four Grammys including Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best New Artist, while Kendrick went home empty handed.

After the show, the “Thrift Shop” rapper sent Kendrick a text. “You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you,” he told him.

The good kid, m.A.A.d city rapper joins a list of hip-hop heavyweights who have been snubbed by the Grammys including Nas, Snoop Dogg, and even Tupac and Biggie.

“I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre,” said Kendrick. “We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.”

His peers including Meek Mill, Mac Miller, Q-Tip, Fabolous, and ScHoolboy Q also weighed in on Kendrick’s shutout.

“Congrats 2 @macklemore for a incredible win and I believe Kendrick was robbed,” tweeted Meek. “This game was never fair….and awards can’t change the judgement of the culture…. Most of these awards are always fucked up!”

Kanye West Beating Victim Scores Six-Figure Settlement

Kanye West

Kanye West has agreed to pay more than $250,000 to the kid who he allegedly beat up in a Beverly Hills chiropractor office earlier this month.

TMZ reports that the young man who hurled racial epithets at Kim Kardashian has agreed to the civil settlement and won’t go forward with criminal prosecution.

The incident occurred after the man called Kim a “n****r lover” and hurled other obscenities at her. Kanye burst into the waiting room and reportedly punched the victim in his face.

During settlement negotiations, the man tried to demand payment in the upper six figures, but ended up accepting around $250,000.

The D.A. has not decided whether to charge Kanye with battery, but it’s unlikely since they now have an uncooperative victim. The alleged racial slurs will also not sit well with a jury.
