Chance the Rapper Throws First Pitch at White Sox Game

Chance the Rapper

While 50 Cent made headlines for his disastrous first pitch, Chance the Rapper saved himself the embarrassment. The Acid Rap MC threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the White Sox game against the San Diego Padres at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field on Friday.

Sporting a personalized Sox jersey, the Chi-town native wound up like a pro and threw the ball into the catcher’s glove. He was clearly happy with his performance, celebrating with a victory move.

Chance, along with his father Ken Bennett, spearheaded the #SaveChicago campaign. The goal was to have no victims of gunfire on the first day of Memorial Day weekend. It was a success. The city went 42 hours without a gun-related incident.

Mariah Carey Rides the Subway in Glittery Gown

Mariah Carey

Even the Elusive Chanteuse rides the subway. Mariah Carey traded her chauffeured-driven vehicle for a more modest form of transportation.

The biggest diva of them all took the subway home from the Fresh Air Fund gala in New York City, where she was honored earlier in the evening. Donning a sparkly blue ball gown and sunglasses, Mimi headed onto the D train with her entourage in tow including Jermaine Dupri, BET executive Stephen Hill, and her bodyguards.

“I figured since I’m underdressed, we might as well take the subway,” said Mariah, who documented her travels on Vine.

The “#Beautiful” singer is not the first megastar to commute with the common folk. Rihanna and Jay Z have both taken the train to their concerts.

Mariah will perform a special concert from her home in Bel-Air and sit down with Matt Lauer for a one-on-one interview during the NBC special “Mariah Carey: At Home in Concert with Matt Lauer,” airing Saturday at 8 p.m.

According to HITS, her album Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse is expected to sell 55-60,000 copies in its first week.

Yeezy, who’s possibly recording his next album in Florence, raps in French: “Ou la la, très bien, magnifique.”

The response has been mostly positive. “Hooooooly shit kanye’s back,” wrote one fan, while another added, “this is like 808 and yeezus production with graduation flow.”

Fourteen years after releasing their double-platinum album J.E. Heartbreak, Jagged Edge is readying the sequel. The R&B group caters to the ladies on the lead single, “Hope,” written and produced by twin brothers Brian and Brandon Casey and Bryan-Michael Cox.

The tender ballad is a throwback to the sound we fell in love with on their 2000 album, which spawned the hits “Let’s Get Married” and “Promise.”

“Making a sequel to a classic album is difficult,” said Jermaine Dupri, who serves as executive producer of the new project. “We don’t want to stray from the blueprint of the first album. It’s definitely a challenge, but the fans won’t be disappointed.”

Jay Z Splits with Longtime Business Partner John Meneilly

Jay Z and John Meneilly

Hov is back in the headlines, but this time it’s strictly business. After over a decade, Jay Z and his longtime business manager John Meneilly have parted ways.

The New York Daily News reports that the hip-hop mogul severed ties with Meneilly, who is credited as one of the architects of Roc Nation.

According to one industry insider, the split was not mutual: “It wasn’t his choice.”

However, a second source says it was “amicable and mutual” and that the agreement was made “a couple months ago.”

Meneilly and Jay Z have a long history together. The former Provident Financial executive helped Jay build his Rocawear clothing brand, which sold for $200 million in 2007, and brokered his multi-million Magna Carta…Holy Grail album deal with Samsung last year.

Meneilly also helped take Roc Nation from a record label to a talent management group that now reps artists and athletes including Rihanna, Kanye West, Shakira, CC Sabathia, Skylar Diggins, and Robinson Cano.

Apple Buys Dr. Dre’s Beats for $3 Billion

Jimmy Iovine, Tim Cook, and Dr. Dre

The deal is done. Nearly three weeks after initial reports, Apple has officially acquired Beats Electronics and Beats Music, founded by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.

Apple is acquiring the companies for a total of $3 billion, consisting of $2.6 billion in cash and $400 million in Apple stock.

The deal, which is expected to close before the end of September, is the most expensive acquisition in Apple’s 38-year history, and includes the subscription streaming music service Beats Music, and Beats Electronics, maker of Beats headphones, speakers, and audio software.

As part of the acquisition, Dre and Iovine will both become key executives in Apple’s music divisions.

“We have known these guys forever,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told the AP. “We’ve dated, we’ve gone steady and now we are getting married. This relationship started a decade ago, so we know there is an incredible cultural fit. These two guys have a very rare set of skills. It’s like finding a particular grain of sand on the beach. It’s that rare.”

Dr. Dre was seen celebrating the news earlier this month in a video posted online.

“The first billionaire in hip-hop right here from the motherfu**ing West Coast,” said Dre.

According to Forbes, the deal would bump Dre’s net worth to around $800 million. While not quite enough to land on the Forbes 400, it would easily make him hip-hop’s wealthiest mogul, topping current champ Diddy by $100 million.

He’s been inspired by one of his fellow rappers. “I’ve been listening to a lot of J. Cole, so he kinda helped me,” revealed Sage.

After Skyping with the Roc Nation MC on MTV’s “RapFix Live,” he started listening to his music. “I was like, ‘He’s saying some real stuff.’ And I liked the way he spit and he doubled up and his delivery is hecka tight. ‘LAnd of the Snakes,’ I’m on that song. Crazy.”

In addition to Cole, he would love to work with Chris Brown. “I’ve been listening to him for a while,” Sage said of the “Loyal” singer. “I actually fell in love around the time he first came out. Review Roundup: Mariah Carey – ‘Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse’

Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse

There’s only one Mariah, and she’s not going anywhere. While she’s inspired a new generation of divas, the iconic singer proves she hasn’t lost her luster with her first album in nearly five years, Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse, in stores today.

On the follow-up to 2009′s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Mimi caters to her diverse fanbase with hip-hop bangers (“Thirsty”), gospel power ballads (“Heavenly”), and disco-soul grooves (“Meteorite”).

She enlists Nas, Fabolous, Miguel, Wale, Stevie Wonder, and even Dem Babies, with production from hitmakers including Jermaine Dupri, Hit-Boy, Rodney Jerkins, and Q-Tip.

Did MC hit all the right notes with critics? The reviews are in.

Los Angeles Times : A generation of today’s pop singers like Ariana Grande have grown up idolizing Carey, and her sound is again back in vogue. What a treat that this daftly titled album really is a statement of a still-relevant musical identity as well. 2.5/4

USA Today : Gone is the self-consciousness that marred her last studio album, 2009′s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Instead, Carey gives the impression that her only concerns are meeting her own standards, and those of the fans who have stuck with her through everything. 3.5/4

Entertainment Weekly : Ariana Grande may have been christened the ‘new Mariah,’ but we still need the old one. And she is telling you that she’s not going. B

Newsday : It’s a balance that may be elusive to many, but Carey has nailed it once again on Chanteuse, her strongest effort since 1995′s Daydream.

Boston Globe : What is unfortunately not elusive on the album are a clutch of interchangeable slow-to-midtempo tunes long on pulsating atmosphere—several with distractingly fidgety rhythmic tracks—but short on melody or verve.

New York Daily News : Contrary to its title, the new album may be Carey’s least elusive work. Rarely has she made her talent more clear. 4/5

Lil Wayne Defends Lil Twist, Says ‘F**k You’ to Scooter Braun

Lil Twist and Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is coming to Lil Twist’s defense. The Young Money chief has some words for Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun.

Twist’s friendship with Bieber ended after he was removed from the teen superstar’s home following a series of run-ins with the law. He was portrayed as being a bad influence on Bieber, but Wayne won’t let him take the fall.

In a video shot by DJ Scoob Doo last night (via MTV News), Weezy delivers some scathing words directed at Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, whom he deems responsible for tarnishing Twist’s name.

“I heard this bitchass ni**a Scooter talkin’ shit about my little brother,” says Weezy as he exits his private jet with his arm around Twist.

“Ni**a, this my motherfu**in’ brother, anything you got to say, when you see me say it to my motherfu**in’ face,” says Wayne. “And if you do happen to say it to my motherfu**in’ face, I ain’t gonna make you eat them words ni**a, I’ma put them bitches on your tombstone.”

He ends the threatening clip by saying, “Fu*k you Scooter!”

In November, Twist publicly accused Scooter of planting stories to make him look bad and uphold Bieber’s “squeaky clean” image.

T.I. and Floyd Mayweather Brawl in Las Vegas

T.I. and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It was fight night in Las Vegas on Saturday, but it didn’t happen in the ring. T.I. and Floyd Mayweather Jr. got into a massive brawl at a Fatburger on the Strip.

According to TMZ, the boxing champ was eating inside the restaurant when T.I. walked up and exchanged heated words with him. The rapper allegedly swung at Mayweather before a chair-tossing brawl erupted and bodyguards stepped in to break things up.

It’s unclear what caused the altercation, but it appears that T.I.’s wife Tiny was hanging out with Mayweather and his 14-year-old daughter earlier in the day.

At one point, Mayweather was heard telling T.I., “You control your bitch, motherfu**er. Go get mad at your bitch.”

Police arrived just as Mayweather was leaving, but T.I. had already fled the scene.

A Fatburger employee was slightly injured during the fight, but he refused treatment and did not want to cooperate with police.

50 Cent, who is friends with Mayweather, weighed in with his hilarious commentary on Instagram.

“My little brothers crazy, first RAY j then Nelly now TIP,” he said of Mayweather.

Bystanders captured video, which can be seen below.
