Kendrick Lamar Reacts to Grammy Shutout

Kendrick Lamar

Hip-hop fans were outraged after Kendrick Lamar lost all seven of his nominations at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. But the Compton MC is not feeling sorry for himself. Speaking out for the first time since his loss, he congratulated Macklemore on his wins.

“It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man,” Kendrick told XXL after his performance with Dom Kennedy in New York on Tuesday. “He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go.”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis scored four Grammys including Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best New Artist, while Kendrick went home empty handed.

After the show, the “Thrift Shop” rapper sent Kendrick a text. “You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you,” he told him.

The good kid, m.A.A.d city rapper joins a list of hip-hop heavyweights who have been snubbed by the Grammys including Nas, Snoop Dogg, and even Tupac and Biggie.

“I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre,” said Kendrick. “We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.”

His peers including Meek Mill, Mac Miller, Q-Tip, Fabolous, and ScHoolboy Q also weighed in on Kendrick’s shutout.

“Congrats 2 @macklemore for a incredible win and I believe Kendrick was robbed,” tweeted Meek. “This game was never fair….and awards can’t change the judgement of the culture…. Most of these awards are always fucked up!”
