Despite releasing one of the most acclaimed rap albums of 2014, YG was not nominated for any Grammys. The Compton rapper spoke out about his snub during an interview on Power 106.
His debut My Krazy Life was excluded from all the rap categories including Best Rap Album.
The nominees included Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic, Childish Gambino’s Because the Internet, Common’s Nobody’s Smiling, Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2, Wiz Khalifa’s Blacc Hollywood, and ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron.
While promoting his new album Blame It On the Streets on “Big Boy’s Neighborhood,” YG didn’t hold back.
“Some of them albums is wack,” he said. “My album is better than them albums. I already knew I wasn’t gon’ win a Grammy, they not gon’ give me a Grammy, but they gon’ nominate me for sure. When I seen some of the albums on there, I ain’t really get it. I really feel some type of way and I know it got something to do with me being from the streets and representing what I represent.”
He continued, “But I feel like the Grammy people gotta know, I’m the people’s champ. I’m the people’s people. They really rockin’ with me.”
However, he didn’t knock his fellow nominees. “I came up with Iggy,” he said. “I know Iggy, ScHoolboy, all them. I’m rockin’ with them. I already knew they was gonna be nominated.”
“It’s just some albums that my album is for sure better than. I feel like that’s a slap in the face, like, ‘You ni**a.’”
He blamed it on “politics mixed with all that bulls**t.”
But he doesn’t need Grammy voters to tell him that he had the best album. “I really had the best rap album of 2014… All these rappers gon’ tell you that.”
