Album Cover: Kanye West – ‘Yeezus’

Yeezus

Hear ‘Ye, hear ‘Ye. Kanye West has unveiled the official cover for his sixth album Yeezus . A blank CD appears behind a clear plastic case with a piece of red duct tape attached to the side and the title scrawled out in Sharpie.

Kim Kardashian and members of Yeezy’s crew previously tweeted photos of a different cover that appeared to have a melted Jesus piece and the red tape.

When you mouse over the cover on KanyeWest.com, you can hear 13 seconds of a new song reportedly titled “Bound.” (If you can’t access the site, listen to the audio below.)

The packaging was designed by DONDA, Kanye’s creative company, which also did the art for 2 Chainz’ Based on a T.R.U. Story and Lil Wayne’s I Am Not a Human Being II.

There will reportedly be no pre-orders in advance of the June 18 street date. Kanye debuted his new Frank Ocean-assisted song “New Slaves” via projection screens across the world and performed new material for the first time on “SNL” earlier this month.

What do you think of the cover art? Let us know in the comments below.

Wale Previews ‘Bad’ Remix with Rihanna

Wale and Rihanna

One of the most anticipated collaborations on Wale’s album The Gifted is the remix to “Bad” featuring Rihanna. The MMG rapper gave Sway a first listen to the song during his visit to “Sway in the Morning.” He played a snippet featuring the “original bad girl” on his phone while on air.

RiRi can be heard singing Tiara Thomas’ part and even adds some rhymes. “Bad girls want a real ni**a,” she declares, while Wale raps, “Bad girls always end up unapologetic.”

In addition to Rihanna, The Gifted (due June 25) features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Juicy J, 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Meek Mill, and more.

New Music: Melodic Chaotic – ‘The Intro’

Lauryn Hill Shares Meaning Behind ‘Neurotic Society’

Lauryn Hill

When she released her new song “Neurotic Society” earlier this month, Lauryn Hill had some listeners dissecting her lyrics while others were left scratching their heads. Now she breaks down the message behind the song. In a letter posted on her Tumblr page, Ms. Hill provides us with the CliffsNotes. She states that the record is not about anyone in particular.

“I am not targeting any particular group of people, but rather targeting everyone in our society who hides behind neurotic behavior, rather than deal with it,” writes the 37-year-old Fugees frontwoman, who launched her own label, Obverse Creation Music, with Sony.

She hopes her music will encourage change. “The overarching message of my music is to get up and stop compromising! And hopefully it will stimulate and motivate the changes that our society needs.”

Ms. Hill was sentenced to three months in prison for failing to pay taxes on about $1.8 million in earnings. She has until July 8 to surrender.

Read her full explanation below.

Neurotic Society is a song about people not being, or not being able to be, who and what they truly are, due to the current social construct. I am not targeting any particular group of people, but rather targeting everyone in our society who hides behind neurotic behavior, rather than deal with it.

The world we live in now is, in many ways, an abhorrent distortion, an accumulation of generations and generations of response to negative stimuli. Many don’t even have a concept of what normal is, by virtue of having lived afraid, ashamed, as victims of abuse, or inadequately handled for so long. I believe in coming up from under that fear and allowing the psyche/soul to truly heal. I understand that healing is a process, but I also believe that it is our responsibility to seriously care for ourselves, so that we can extend that level of concern for others and positively affect our environment.

I want what is best for Humanity. Humanity, aligned with the Spiritual principles, that help each individual conquer fear, and transcend limited circumstance. I believe in healing and dealing with the traumatizing events of our lives, both in this lifetime, as well as those passed down to us, or inherited, so we can live as fully as possible.

The whole world suffers from a lack of honest dialogue. Character and integrity have suffered at the hands of political correctness and corporate agenda, while our society moves further and further towards unhealthiness and breakdown. I oppose these trends.

Everyone has a right to their own beliefs. Although I do not necessarily agree with what everyone says or does, I do believe in everyone’s right to protest.

The overarching message of my music is to get up and stop compromising! And hopefully it will stimulate and motivate the changes that our society needs.

Artists are constantly under media and public scrutiny. This is not a one-way street. Those of us with the charge of putting out faithful vibrations, have a responsibility to report what we see, and to write about what we know. I have seen some of the best and also some of the worst representations of human behavior. The same way that I exalt that which is high, is the same way I expose that which is abusive, in order to motivate and remind if not all of us, than as many as possible, of the Higher Calling.

Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sports Host Welcome Reception for Skylar Diggins

Jay-Z and Skylar Diggins

Roc Nation Sports rolled out the red carpet for its new client Skylar Diggins. Jay-Z was on hand to welcome the former Notre Dame women’s basketball star to NYC at a private reception at the 40/40 Club on Thursday.

Earlier this month, Roc Nation also bought Skylar a brand new Mercedes-Benz as a gift for graduating from Notre Dame.

“Got surprised with a new mercedes! Thanks so much to Jay and @rocnation, and @dancyautogroup!” tweeted the 22-year-old, who was drafted third overall by the Tulsa Shock in the WNBA draft.

In addition to Skylar, Jay-Z’s agency has signed New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith as clients.

While the mood was celebratory, the hip-hop mogul and his company are currently under scrutiny. The NFL Players Association has launched an investigation into just how involved Jay-Z was in recruiting Smith to Roc Nation Sports.

Under a 2012 NFLPA rule, only NFLPA-certified agents may be involved in the recruitment of clients (Smith’s Roc Nation agent, Kim Miale, is certified, but Jay is not). If Jay-Z had any role in recruiting Smith, Roc Nation would be in violation of NFLPA recruiting rules.

Mindless Behavior is growing up before our eyes. Rap-Up TV was on set as the teen sensations shot the mature video for “Used to Be,” the latest single off their sophomore album All Around the World. Despite a rigorous rehearsal schedule and 3 a.m. call time, the fellas didn’t miss a beat while showcasing some new moves on the rooftop of the lavish pad. “The choreography is very Mindless mixed with Jodeci mixed with New Edition,” said Princeton. “You’re definitely gonna see our grown man side here.”

In addition to the dance studio, they hit up the gym to get in shape for their sexy scenes. “You might catch some shirts off here and there,” teased Ray Ray.

When it comes to their style, they took inspiration from New Edition, rocking white dress shirts, bow ties, and Chuck Taylors. “I think this is one of the most eclectic videos we’ve done so far,” said Princeton, while Ray Ray added, “It feels good to actually show the fans the real us, the real age, and how we’re maturing over time.”

J.Lo has been working on her 10th album with Chris Brown, Future, and RedOne, whose label 2101 Records/Capitol Records she is signed to. “The album is almost done,” RedOne told Rap-Up TV. “It has at least four or five bangers, incredible hits.”

New Music: Shanell – ‘Catch Me at the Light’ + ‘Dedicated’

Midnight Mimosas

Shanell has been covering R&B classics each week as part of her “Throwback Music Thursday Series.” Now the Young Money singer releases two original songs off her upcoming mixtape Midnight Mimosas, which drops June 4. On “Catch Me at the Light,” she searches for a man with whip appeal, while the bouncy “Dedicated” is a ’90s-inspired jam with a mean guitar riff.

Angel Haze Debuts New Single ‘No Bueno’ in London

Angel Haze

In addition to sharing the stage with Iggy Azalea, Angel Haze debuted “No Bueno,” the first single off her upcoming debut Dirty Gold, during her show at Scala in London earlier this month. The rising star delivers some aggressive rhymes over a rock-driven instrumental.

“I’ve been very vocal about the fact that I am not a fucking rapper. When I say rock star, I mean that shit,” she told the crowd.

The song hits iTunes on June 4, while the video is set to debut on June 11.

Nicki Minaj Buries Beef with Peter Rosenberg, Returns to Hip-Hop Roots on Third Album

Nicki Minaj

One year after her infamous blowout with Hot 97, Nicki Minaj came face to face with morning host Peter Rosenberg, who caused her to pull out of Summer Jam by dissing her song “Starships.” The two explained their sides of the story and put their differences aside.

While the Barbz may not forgive him, Nicki has moved on. “It’s cool. It’s water under the bridge,” she told Rosenberg. “It’s so long ago, I can’t even act like I care anymore. I don’t care, I really don’t. I appreciate you guys having me.”

She did admit that she should have still performed despite the situation. “In hindsight, I should of just did the show because I’ve never allowed anyone—no matter what I’ve gone through personally or professionally—I’ve never allowed that to make me let my fans down,” she said. “In hindsight, I should of just came out ’cause it’s my hometown, especially. They shouldn’t have been brought into whatever we were going through. I wish I woud have came out and did the show, and I apologize for not coming out and doing the show ’cause they had nothing to do with that.”

While she never saw or heard the controversial remark, she did let Rosenberg know how she felt about him. “I never found you funny. I never found you entertaining. I never found you smart. I just found you annoying,” she said. “To me, you don’t have enough of a résumé to make those comments, but you did and it is what it is. For whatever reason, our paths were meant to cross like that, so it’s over.”

Her next album will be a return to her hip-hop roots. “If I really wanted to right now, I could go back in and make another pop song like that to sell all this stuff, and I’m choosing not to do it. I’m choosing to get back to my essence and just feed the core hip-hop fan.”

Don’t expect to hear another “Starships” on the album. “I feel like I did it, I don’t need to do it again. I don’t know how I’m gonna feel after the third album, but I know for the third album, I’ve just been getting back to that place where I was right before I dropped my first album, which is kill everything.”

But she has no regrets and is happy with her career choices. “I would do every single thing the same exact way.”

When asked if she is a diva, she responded, “I handle my business and also I speak up for myself. If I was not like this, so many people would have taken advantage of me,” she said. “I just dealt with a lot of stuff from guys, and plus my father was so crazy with his alcohol and drug abuse, I just always felt like I’m never gonna let anyone pull me down, make me feel small. I’m never gonna let a man do that.”

Hot 97 program director Ebro extended an invitation for her to come out at this year’s Summer Jam, but she has to check her availability.

She reflected on her experience on “American Idol” and her feud with Mariah Carey. “Now looking back, I can say, ‘Hmm, they’re very calculated. They knew a lot of things, but they gave me a great opportunity.’ … I did have a good time.”

Plus, she spoke about accepting her homosexual fans, her attraction to non-celebrities, and shooting the revenge comedy The Other Woman with Cameron Diaz.

Rap-Up TV: Dallas Austin Talks TLC Biopic, 20th Anniversary Album

Dallas Austin and TLC topped the charts with hit after hit in the ’90s, and 20 years later, they’re rekindling the magic. The legendary producer has been in the studio with T-Boz and Chilli working on a new album to commemorate TLC’s 20th anniversary.

During the BMI Pop Awards, Austin shared more details about the project. “We took a lot of the old songs and remastered them. We mixed them just to tweak them, make them better,” he told Rap-Up TV.

TLC has also collaborated with some of today’s biggest stars. “They did something with J. Cole, they might be doing something with Drake,” revealed Austin.

In addition to new music, T-Boz and Chilli serve as consultants and executive producers on the VH1 biopic Crazy, Sexy, Cool: The TLC Story starring Lil Mama, KeKe Palmer, and Drew Sidora.

“They look so much like the girls and their characters act so much like the girls, I think it might be the closest casting I’ve seen so far,” said Austin, who was on set. “I think it’s gonna touch a lot of people because they’re so good at being the characters.”

The film was shot in Atlanta and is set to premiere in November.
