New Music: Kendrick Lamar – ‘i’

i

King Kendrick is back. Nearly two years after releasing his debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city, TDE’s golden child steps back to the mic with his anthemic new single “i.” The soulful song, produced by Rahki, samples the Isley Brothers’ ’70s classic “That Lady.”

“I haven’t been listening to any rap for the last six months. I bought the whole Isley Brothers collection,” he told Flaunt magazine last year. “They were on some grown shit. When I was a kid I didn’t know—but now that I’m grown, I understand a woman’s feelings and my own reaction as a man, and temptations. And I appreciate it so deeply now.”

Kendrick’s sophomore album is due later this year featuring production from Dr. Dre and TDE’s in-house producers Digi+Phonics.

“There was a lot left out of good kid—it could have been a 30-track album,” he told Rolling Stone of the follow-up to his 2012 debut. “There are a few new [songs] that can tie in with what I was talking about.”
